Message from Head of

Department of Cardiology and Vascular Medicine

Faculty of Medicine University of Indonesia

With life style changes in Indonesian population, it is believed that cardiovascular disease rate will be increase. The house hold survey Year 2004 from Department of Health, Republic of Indonesia, has proven that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in Indonesia.

Therefore, it is important to prepare qualified human resources especially cardiologists, beside  improving the available health facilities. Ever since National Cardiovascular Center Harapan Kita (NCCHK) was build in 1985, working and move together with Department of Cardiology and Vascular Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia in education, research and cardiovascular services placing NCCHK as a national cardiovascular referral hospital.

Based on that facts, Department of Cardiology and Vascular Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia has an important role to spread the knowledge and technology in the field of cardiovascular, not only for medical students, residents of cardiology or Cardiologist, but also for public community.

Education activities for medical students include lectures, guidance and basic clinical skill practice for regular and international medical students, Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia.

                As the first educational institution for residents in Cardiology and Vascular Medicine in Indonesia, surely that the 30 years experience has brought Department of Cardiology and Vascular Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia to a well known and famous institution, either in national and international level, especially in Asia Pacific region. Cooperation with various international cardiovascular institution for staff education has been set up since long time ago including St. Vincent Hospital Sydney, Royal Children Hospital Austin and Epworth Hospital Melbourne, University of New South Wales, Liverpool Hospital Sydney (Australia), National University Hospital (Singapore), Tokyo Woman and Children Hospital and Cardiovascular institution in Kobe and Okayama (Japan), Institut Jantung Negara, Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Academic Medisch Centrum, University of Amsterdam, Leiden University Medical Centrum, Leiden, Erasmus University, Rotterdam (the Netherlands) and National Yang-Ming University, Taiwan Veterans General Hospital (Taipei).

                The cardiovascular research program of Department of Cardiology and Vascular Medicine, Faculry of Medicine, University of Indonesia has dominate the central data and research  program of NCCHK. The largest benefit that is obtained including cost efficiency to produce such research that is relevant to the proportion of cardiovascular knowledge and technology.

                The cardiovascular services program could be done just like other developed countries due to complete facilities that available in NCCHK. Non surgical cardiovascular intervention like Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (1519 procedures/year), Amplatzer Ductal/Septal Occlusion, Balloon Vavuloplasty, Percutaneous Vascular Intervention, Ablation, and adult surgical intervention such as Coronary Artery Bypass Graft  surgery (476 cases/year), Valvular operation (198/year) with Congenital Heart Disease operation (559 cases/year), have been done since long time ago.

                With the vision: To Become the Leading Cardiovascular Education Center in Asia Pacific Region in 2012, Department of Cardiology and Vascular Medicine will keep on working hard, dedicated to nation and country.
